Great Britain used regular packet services to the royal colonies in the Orient. One of the better known ships from the Victorian era was the Empress of India, sailing the Calcutta route. The British East India Company, sending many of her plantation managers and other personnel to India, was one of the world's biggest companies at the time. The original of Empress of India clock was reputed to have functioned in the main pier customs buildings of the port of Calcutta, keeping track of arrival and departure times of the many sailing vessels.
